More thoughts on an artist statement

I know that I have been lagging on writing some additonal artist statements about some of the newer series that I have posting on my web site. I am not sure of the reluctance because I seem to chase anything else but that task. I am very sure that it is a case of avoidance.

So why doing something else this morning, I tripped over a web site that was posted on Doug Plummers “resources” on writing artist statements. So she has written his one statement that best summerizes the issue;

“When you don’t know exactly what an artist statement is, you end up cobbling together resumes, biographical statements, and critiques about your artwork and technique. This usually happens when the way you use an artist statement – as support material for your art – gets confused with what it is: a very personal reflection on what, how and why you do what you do (my emphsis).”

She has more to say and a related book to sell. Some nice thoughts, but it confirms that I am on the right track about it being a personal reflection about what I need to write. I seem to be fine with a committement to an image that makes up a series, but hesitant about the personal words. Maybe I feel that this allows you gets toooo close?

I guess that this blog is good therapy for that:- )
