Silent Witness (form Series: Bad Trip – Sad Trip)
…We are celebrating the U.S. independence day this week, which officially occurs on this Wednesday, July 4th, but we sometimes make a week of it. Yeah!
I have been waiting for this occassion to post a rather sobering image as a reminder for those who like to party perhaps a bit too much during this time. This particular accident occured July 4th, 2000 and it took five of the six young adults that were trying to “shoot” the intersection, after a long party that they had attended until early the following morning. While photographing this intersection, I had a chance to talk with the sheriff who was there following the accident.
Four kids were in the back of the pick-up, the driver tuned off his lights (about 2am) and sped up to cross the four lane highway without looking, e.g. “shoot the intersection”. This four lane highway runs intra-state and parallel to a pay road/turnpike, thus lots of very large trucks drive this road. And a big semi-rig was driving this road that night and hardly anything was left of the kids and their pick-up.
These crosses are very prodominatly arranged in the middle of this intersection as a very real real reminder and a silent witness to the sad events that occurred.
Best regards, Doug

I like the long shadows, and the “Do Not Enter” sign in the composition.
Rosie, thanks for noticing the sign. I thought it provided a sublimnal message that reinforced the overall effect of the image. I was trying to make sure that I was not heavy handed with how I balanced the sign in the image. When I started this series, I have found myself composing these kind of signs and messages into the image. But I do not use as much now. Maybe I feel more compfortable that the image can stand on its own. again, thanks!
What a sobering message. That is truly a sad trip.
