2024 Season’s Greetings (Mammoth Mountain, CA) copyright 2024 Douglas Stockdale –
Tis the season for the Holiday card for the 2024 Season’s Greetings!
As like last year, I decided it would be fun to hand embroidery another pigment print, while this year I chose a winter landscape photograph from a 2004 ski trip to Mammoth Mountain. As I remember the skiing was great with a really good snow pack. Win-win.
Due to the overcast conditions, my photograph was okay, while the colors were very muted. My better half encouraged me to tease out the greens of the trees a bit more, which this resulting print is a great color ‘compromise’. While working on this image, I realized that with my next adventure in polymer photo-gravure, this might make an excellent subject…more about that creative adventure hopefully soon. LoL.
I also decided to have a smaller color palette this year as well to change things up a bit more from last year. I also printed the winter landscape a little larger than the final print so that when I rephotographed it, the French knots of color would be correspondingly smaller.
In retrospect, perhaps a little too small…Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the process, the resulting artwork and subsequent Holiday card (Edition of 90) that I printed here in the studio. Wonderful creative way to help finish the year.
I hope you made every day an Earth Day in 2024 as well as one of your goals for 2025.
Doug
