(Dis)information – Juneteenth

Remnant (Entanglement series) 2023 copyright Douglas Stockdale

I am publishing this on the occasion of Juneteenth, a relatively new government holiday in the United States, but celebrated by African Americans for many years. “It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans following the Civil War. Deriving its name from combining June and nineteenth, it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865”. This event was two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed freeing all America slaves.

A reflection on how past policies can still have lingering effects on us today.

Photographed in 2018 with a medium format camera and 80mm lens using expired 120 film (Fujichrome 100F, expired 1997) on a decommissioned WWII/Korean War practice bombing range in Southern California. The Cyanotype contact negative was created and printed in June 2023.

At the moment, due to the nature of my subject, unsure if this cyanotype print should be titled Information, Disinformation, or (Dis)information, while I enjoy the latter, which leaves a bit more open to the prints meaning. So for the moment, I am deferring to (Dis)information. Enjoy.

Cyanotype print, Remnant (from the Entanglement series), copyright 2018/2023, image is 9 x 9″ on a 11 x 14″ sheet of archival Revere Platinum cotton rag (hot press), variable edition of 5 + 1AP. Cyanotype contact negative made from Expired 120 color film scan.
