Awareness (Entanglement series) 2023 copyright Douglas Stockdale –
Cool! Today is World Cyanotype Day (last Saturday of September, each year), an alternative photographic process discovered in 1843 by Sir John Herschel that utilizes the sun’s UV bandwidth to make (blue) prints.
Hard to believe I stated experimenting with the cyanotype printing process just one year ago, the very first experiment making a simple camera-less print using pre-coated cyanotype paper and one of my dried botanical samples.
Since then, my cyanotype prints have been juried into three alternative photographic exhibitions, I became a Critical Mass 2023 Finalist and some of my Critical Mass Finalist submission will be featured later this month in The Hand magazine. All of this concurrent with a steep learning curve on how to make an acceptable cyanotype print, which will be another post. Not too shabby, eh?
One little vexing problem; the need to photograph the resulting cyanotype print and make sure the colors appear correctly while it does not help to neglect to keep the color management calibration up to date. I have noted a slight shift in color hue and contrast with my re-calibrated monitor for my Critical Mass submission. The image above is after tweaking the print file after I recently calibrated my monitor and now I need to update my website for this project accordingly.
Awareness (Entanglement series, Critical Mass Finalist submission) is a cyanotype that is 9 x 9″ on a 11 x 14″ sheet of archival Revere Platinum hot press cotton rag, in an edition of 5 + 1AP.
