Artist Book – Book Workshop

Over the last couple of days I have been working on my limited edition artist book that I will provide to each participant in my Medium Photo book development workshop, which will be starting later this month. Usually this is a bit of surprise on the first day of class when I start the workshop in order to illustrate a point; how relatively easy it is to develop, design and produce an interesting limited edition artist book. I produce all of the parts and in the workshop we then build and bind the artist books, which is essential the workshop’s agenda and outline. Thus a working artist book, since we use it through the workshop, sort of two-per for the workshop.

Since this year is a virtual workshop due to the pandemic, I will be mailing these artist books to each participant early next week and then we will talk about this in the first session of the workshop. It’s also kinda of fun to have everyone leave the workshop with a hand-made artist book. Just one of the many little benefits to participating in my book development workshop. Doesn’t that make you want to follow the links to Medium, sign-up and join the fun? (This is also where I have to state that space is limited and we are just about filled up for this workshop, so if interested, sign-up now.)

This artist book is relatively simple; a stiff cover booklet, printed two-sided on my Canon R-2100, this time with a total of eight interior pages (essentially two 8-1/2 x 11″ sheets printed two-sides), that I am hand-binding using a pamphlet stitch. I recently acquired some dark blue waxed Irish linen thread to sew the books together, but I did not realize that this thread’s out-side diameter is about the same as the inside diameter of the eye of my Binder’s Needles. Takes a little bit longer to thread the these needles! So note to self; I need to purchase another set of Binder’s Needles, but the next size larger; I have a lot of this waxed Irish linen thread to use!

I am using a very simple pamphlet stitch pattern, but instead of tying it off and trimming when I finished, I am ending with a bow that allows each person to untie the bow and tie it off themselves to create a little bit of participation.

We are coming up to the end of registration, so I produced a few extra of this edition in case there are any last minute sign-ups, which ends next Friday. Which also reminds me that I need to start a list of these various artist book editions that I have produced for the different book workshops that I have led. Not that these artist books will be collectors items, but could become some trivia at some point and this is the fourth artist book, two editions with LACP and this is the second edition for Medium.

Cheers & be stay safe
