Middle Ground – reimagined

Middle Ground, limited edition artist book, copyright Douglas Stockdale

I am very excited to ‘relaunch’ the selling of Middle Ground, my limited edition artist book that I self-published in 2018. I have already sold half of the edition, but then I placed the promotion and sales effort on Hold in 2019. I have come to understand a lot more about what initially drew me into this urban landscape project and more about what this artist book investigates; separation and the anxieties that are associated with it. Thus I have recently reimagined the potential significance for this artist book, which is pretty cool.

In one regard, I was lucky when I self-published the book as I choose not to include any essays that discusses the content, thus the artist book remains open-ended as to its possible narratives. Gerhard Clausing, Associate Editor of PhotoBook Journal wrote his book review about Middle Ground, he stated “So we can consider this project, which is a typology of barriers, a metaphor for the barriers and separators of all kinds that people wish to throw between and among us. Especially in our current moment in time there are many whose main task is to foment social, racial, and/or economic anger and pin it on the “others,” whether we are talking about ethnic, social, economic, or other groups.”

In retrospect Clausing provided insightful clues about what I thought I was photographing being viewed in a completely different context that I had originally imaged. His book review made me reconsider the ongoing sales and promotion of this series until I could figure things out. That just took a little bit longer than I had anticipated, but the time has now arrived in which to begin promoting this book and series in the broader context of investigating anxiety, while Middle Ground interrogates aspects of separation and the associated anxieties.

I have been fortunate that this series and artist book is featured in New Landscape Photography, Lenscratch, and Photo Exchange with solo exhibitions at Fabrik Projects, Los Angeles, and on Artsy.com.

Cheers

Doug
