Book review on PhotoBook Journal

PhotoBook Journal; artist book review

Wow, I was really blown away by the review of my artist book by Rudy Vega that was published yesterday on PhotoBook Journal.

His introduction:

In The Flow of Light Brushes the Shadow, Douglas Stockdale has produced an artist book which sets out to visually articulate his anxiety felt as a traveler. The book is part therapy, an exercise in search of catharsis. Stockdale uses the aesthetics of the photographic medium as a vehicle to navigate the murky territory of an anxious mind.

A wonderful first start of the social media launch activities for this artist book. Needless to say, I have a couple of other reviews in the works as well.

Today is the start of my pamphlet stitch binding and assembly of the Artist Special Edition. Thinking that these are the artist books that need to be produced first, and then I will work on the regular editions which have been pre-ordered. For the Artist Special Edition I am binding these with a black waxed Irish linen thread versus the dark blue to further differentiate this limited edition book plus print.

Last weekend I was evaluating a Chinese chop of the book’s Mandarin title, but regretfully the red Chinese ink does not set (dry?) in conjunction with the archival pigment papers. I suspect that with the paper’s coating does not allow the ink to absorb into the fibers that is necessary with this particular kind of ink. Nevertheless, it does set up okay if I use the chop on the uncoated inside of the book’s cover. The Juror is still out, but I suspect that this is an attribute that no matter how much I would like to incorporate into the Artist Special Edition is just not going to happen. Can’t win them all.

Initially I was considering the publication launch of this artist book on September 1st (tomorrow), but the production of this artist book is a lot slower than I had anticipated. I have incorporated some production tweaks to help, but this is a sloooooooow process of printing, trimming and then pamphlet stitching to make sure each one looks great. So now the new Singular Images Press website states a generalized September publication date. Fortunately when printing the colophon of the artist book I had the good sense to state the publication as ‘2022’.

Okay, I can accidentally win one.

Cheers & make every day an Earth Day

Doug
