Blue Horizon – A new cyanotype series

Blue Horizon (number 5505) copyright 2023 Douglas Stockdale  –

Earlier this year I was in the midst of working on the Last Iceberg cyanotypes when I received my Critical Mass 2023 Finalist notification for my Entanglement cyanotype series. Full stop on the work for Last Iceberg series in anticipation that I might be in the Top-50 for Critical Mass 2023 (regretfully I was not). During this lull from working on my Last Iceberg series, I started thinking of what the ocean might look like without any icebergs? I guess this would be the aftermath of the continuing climate change that resulted in the total melting of all of earth’s ice masses.

Thus, a seascape cyanotype without any icebergs could then be the ending print for a related photobook or it might be the last image in a Critical Mass (or other) submission. Would the ocean due to the increased temperature be calm or really turbulent? Would there be lots and lots of stormy clouds or now a clear blue sky hovering over the ocean? Maybe all of this at one time or another.

I am now working a bunch of seascape cyanotype variations in a series I am calling Blue Horizon as a what-if, because a good chance nobody will be around to determine if I am correct or not as to the aftermath conditions when the icebergs are gone. A little bit of Futurist non-scientific what-if.

For this version, above, I took advantage of a cloudy evening and to really flatten the ocean, especially since the ocean surf was pretty small, I made this exposure about 10 minutes after sundown for a duration of about 30 seconds. I waited for a wave set to subside and then capture the short lull before the next wave set formed. Thus, a dreamy seascape without any icebergs, which I find contemplative.

The Blue Horizon (Aftermath series No. 5505), an imaginary futuristic landscape without Icebergs. The cyanotype image is 8 x 12″ printed on a 11 x 14″ sheet of Revere Platinum archival cotton rag, printed 2023, Variable Edition of 5 + 1AP.

Make every day and Earth Day
