Fragmented Realities: our exhibit at OC Camera Gallery

I am very honored to have the opportunity to co-exhibit with Paul Anderson at the OC Camera Gallery this coming March.

Artist statement: Fragmented Realities is an exhibition of two complementary bodies of art by Paul Anderson and myself that investigates the contemporary urban landscape. Both are very divergent in their respective methodologies, pairing the old with the new. I utilize an early mid-1800 photographic (cyanotype) process, while Anderson utilizes customized computer programming to achieve certain visual effects.

Our work is about the transitory nature of the physical world. A sense of myth, ritual and mystery are what bind these images together. We may begin with a preconceived idea, while allowing the image to evolve and morph while mingling with some unnamable mystery. The resulting images are subject to the interpretative nature of memory, lending itself to an abstract narrative that is not clear or well-defined, more like half-remembered, elusive dreams that work to explore poetic beauty in otherwise quotidian subjects.

While based on photography, the resulting images could not be termed ‘straight’ photography, with the digital image or film as just the starting place for our creative imagination. The resulting images reflect the rich and sometimes discordant environment in which we live creating forms of abstraction and surrealism to interpret the landscape genre. Both of us are members of the Photographers Exchange and Contributing Editors for PhotoBook Journal.

We both share a common visual question; What represents the contemporary urban landscape genre today?

This is also an opportunity to exhibit my 2023 and 2024 Critical Mass Finalist project.
