JiaShan, Hutong Boatman (Chinese Picture Postcards series) 2008 copyright Douglas Stockdale –
As I continue to develop my new series Chinese Picture Postcards, I decided that I would start my blog for this project very early on. Since this series is intented to be paired images, one side an idealistic composed photograph and the facing side a bit closer to reality, I will post the pairs as I fine tune these on this new blog. I expect that the same image may get paired up with different combinations. And probably not much of an explaination, just the photographs.
I have found this photograph to be an interesting juxtaposition of an old Hutong on one side of this waterway and on the opposite bank the new recently built high rise structures where another Hutong was once situated. Old staring at the New, with the boatman in the middle seemingly on a journey to the other side, perhaps the Chinese equivalent of Hades and the ferryman transitioning on the river Styx.
I now have the new blog linked up on the side, so check in from time to time & see how it develops.
(Update: this series did not develop as I had intended and the blog was subsequently deleted)
Best regards,
Doug
Wow, that is gorgeous… stark and compelling. I can’t wait to see how the series develops!
