A homage to Molly McCall. While reviewing her Momento Vivere portfolio last year, she had created one image, Dissolved, that has really stayed with me. So while getting my eyes checked out earlier this year just as the pandemic was starting to break, I had to have this eye correction gear on to confirm that the settings for my new glasses was correct (that’s another story). When I looked in a mirror with this thing on her image came immediately to mind and I saw this as a great potential metaphor for a photographic artist.
I had pre-visualized this as a higher contrast black & white photograph to increase the emphasis on the dials and fitments of this prescription device, while the idea of adding the color came a little later while thinking about how else to emulate McCall’s Dissolved. As to the color choice, my first option was blue (vote Democratic!), then as I experimented with the various options and thought about having a positive outlook on current circumstances. Thus a rose color for one lens might make sense for the days of COVID-19. So maybe this selfie version leans into more of a COVID-19 selfie.
Photographic artist are about looking and seeing. And as an artist, I like to think we have a habit of seeing some things slightly differently.
Cheers, stay healthy and safe,
Doug
