Urban Ashes, multi-media monotypes, copyright 2024 Douglas Stockdale –
Wow, for the second consecutive issue of The Hand magazine, I have a full page feature of my artwork submissions. Last issue #46 featured my cyanotypes I made from photographs from my assignment in China in 2008, while for issue #47 (above), a bit different subject and alternative printing process. I really like this trend!
Urban Ashes is an environmental awareness project about the disastrous effects of urban wildfires that are occurring more often and with more intensity as the earth’s atmosphere continues to heat. Recent wildfire events in Los Angeles and throughout Southern California are another case in point. Global heating continues to occur whether the current American WH administration acknowledges it or not and criminal that they are not taking steps to stop it’s progress.
I wrote earlier about creating monotypes with my Urban Ashes series while I have continued to tweak this gel (a type of relief) printing process. At the moment, I am spending a lot more time monotype printing and less cyanotype printing, as I find the monotype printing a lot more of an artistic challenge.
I was also very flattered when one of these monotypes, top image below, was chosen by The Hand to promote issue #47.
There were two firestorm aftermaths that I had documented, Marshall Fire in Boulder, CO and Airport Fire in El Cariso Vally, Riverside, CA and provided the foundation of my subsequent artwork. The features images are provided below.
FYI, these unique images are 16 x 20″ on a 20 x 24″ sheet of rag, using both pigment and transparent intaglio inks.
