Left coast photobook News; I will be presenting “Photography Books as Art” at the upcoming Pasadena Photographic Arts (PPA) Forum series on August 8th, 2019. Although this is a FREE event, you are requested to make a reservation as seating is limited.
Photobooks have almost become ubiquitous in this digital age with a steady stream of new book titles and many options to self-publish. Nevertheless, a well-designed and thoughtfully conceived photographic book can become a art object and make a tremendous impact on a photographic career. It takes time, creativity, energy, fortitude, patience and guts.
A photobook can be a gallery exhibition without walls, extending your presence well beyond your local community, engaging your audience for years to come, become an insightful look at your special story or a unique, stand-alone artist object.
I will be discussing how a photographic book can become an art object, drawing on my many years as Editor/Publisher of PhotoBook Journal as well as self-publishing three artist books and the Guide to Self-Publishing Your Artist Book. I will bring a wide range of photobook examples from my personal collection.
Many of these books that will be discussed are self-published in very small editions and most are not available in US bookstores on the west coast, thus a rare opportunity to review these artist book objects. I will also have a small selection of various artist books for sale, including copies of Guide to Self-Publishing Your Artist Book ($24.00 including CA sale tax, checks payable to Douglas Stockdale) to benefit the PhotoBook Journal.
