With recent events I have not been updating my art-blog as frequently as I have in the past. sigh. Thus a little bit of catching up to do as it relates to my alternative photography that has been featured in The Hand magazine over the past year.
I will start with the most recent The Hand, issue #53, Summer 2026 which was just issued, that included a half-page image of my Artichoke Thistles, Winter Transition, a multi-media monotype, above. This is a 21 x 12″ image using Pigment and intaglio inks with Prismacolor pencils on a 20 x 24″ cotton rag sheet.

I was featured in the previous issue #52, Spring 2026, with a full page of five multi-media monotypes from my Urban Ashes series. As I hope you can imagine, my intent is to illustrate the devastating results of urban wildfires which are occurring more frequently, as well as with more intensity. This is the second time that this environment series has been featured by The Hand; previously was issue #47, discussed here: https://singularimages.net/2025/02/09/urban-ashes-multi-media-monotypes-featured-in-the-hand-magazine-47/. All of these prints are approximately 16 x 20″ on a 20 x 24″ sheet of cotton rag.
The detailed images for my monotypes in this feature are included, below. The monotypes in this issue have had additional work that I have learned since starting to work with the water-based intaglio inks; such as lifting (removing) some of the ink and adding Prismacolor pencils to create stronger visual emphasis. One of the monotypes, Element Hotel, Superior, Colorado was subsequently juried into another local exhibition, but that’s for another post as I get caught up.

I was featured in the previous issue #51, Winter 2025, with a singular image of hand-colored print from then developing series of Artichoke Thistles as a visual metaphor for aging. I applied Prismacolor pencils over a high contrast pigment ink print as an experiment for what I might create using intaglio inks. Also, on my alternative photography bucket list, as I considered this photographic print treatment while making my wet darkroom prints so very long ago. LoL
In retrospect, the hand-coloring of these prints provided me with some subsequent artistic options for my later monotypes. So I put these bucket-list experiments to some really good use. Always nice when that happens.

Finally, to fill in the last PR gap for The Hand are my two cyanotypes featured in issue #49, Summer, 2025, from my Entanglement series. These cyanotype weave prints resulted in my efforts to really push my conceptual envelope for this series. I literally starting hacking and cutting up many of my prints, while I also had remnants from my earlier print weaves. Then on top of these assemblies, I added in the hand-sewn lines that connected and extended the barbed wire found on this urban site. These cyanotype images were also included in my Critical Mass submission in 2025 that became my third consecutive Critical Mass Finalist selection.
