It gets pretty exciting during the publication of a new book to receive the first set of hard proofs from a printer at the later stages of the pre-press activities.
It is also when the reality of what will soon be an artist book begins to take shape. And in some cases when the hard color proofs arrive, even after approving the soft color proofs, it becomes obvious that was is on the monitor that was translated from AbobeRGB to a version of CMYK for offset printing might need some additional tweaking. In my case, the CMYK color space (under Covert to Profile in Photoshop) for our printer’s offset litho press is ‘Coated GRACol (2006)’.
Above, even though I am aware of the differences between ink jet printing and litho printing (difference in color gamuts), I still use my match prints to compare to the printer’s color proof. Sometimes what needs tweaked in the litho printing files is a color gamut adjustment, an easy fix, and sometimes the colors and contrast are not as I might like and want to see. For some of the printed images, the differences are not that noticeable (or maybe a bit better), especially since few individuals will see my original files. So for the images that needed modifications, mostly what I used was a curves layer to tweak the contrast in specific regions of the image. Then flatten the TIFF file and send it to my designer and onward to the printer.
For me, I would rather pay for any additional expense to made the slight adjustments that will allow me to stay in love with the resulting book.
Btw, there is still a little time left to take advantage of the pre-publication prices below and a heads-up that there are not many of the Artist Special Edition left.
Cheers & make every day an Earth Day
