Contemplating Portraits

Ella copyright 2023 Douglas Stockdale

One of the interesting outcomes from publishing my artist book The Flow of Light Brushes the Shadows is a renewed interest in creating portraits. This artist book includes a series of staged self-portraits and some photographs of others who could represent me and others in the process of transitioning.

A new series creating portraits is a way to push my own artistic boundaries beyond urban landscape narratives. While looking at recent portraits on IG, I noted the inclusion of a number of individuals creating tintype portraits, which have a very unique appearance resulting from the tintype process. While I am not interested in learning how to make tintypes (or at least not right now), the idea of incorporating alternative photograph techniques, such as cyanotypes, is very intriguing.

Above is a portrait of Ella that I made into a digital (faux) blueprint to help visualize the cyanotype potential. So once we have a few more really sunny days, I hope to cyanotype print this portrait. Stay tuned!

Cheers & make every day an Earth Day

Doug
