I am very honored to be included in The Photographers Eye’s (virtual) gallery exhibition, Living and Photographing in the Time of COVID-19. As you probably suspect, the theme and concept for the exhibition is pretty well covered by the exhibition title; how we as artists respond to current events brought on by this pandemic. I am joining Wayne Swanson, a Contributing Editor for PhotoBook Journal and Ellen Friedlander, a good friend who also belongs to LACP in this group exhibition. Interestingly both Wayne and Ellen’s artwork are also non-traditional presentations. This online exhibition is from May 8th through August 1st, 2020.
My two artworks in this exhibition are Awareness, above, and Anxiety, below, both of which I have discussed earlier on this photo-blog. The concept of using Words+Image are derived from my earlier project, Gardening For Ordnance. Similar to Gardening, the photographs are created with expired 120 film, which I use as a physical representation for past experiences (pre-COVID). The unpredictability of the expired film provides parallels to the inexactitude of memory, and the decay of the film corresponds with the decomposition of past experiences in light of current circumstances.
Although I have created a small body of work for this pandemic project, A Developing Crisis, I am unsure if I will continue to develop more diptychs to explore the concept further. These diptychs were very therapeutic to help me work through my feelings on what was occurring and I am finding that I am returning to my other projects as I find myself coping with this unseen bug. Nevertheless, this exhibition is a nice validation for this small body of work.
Cheers & stay safe,
